Leather Up This Winter

I have always been strangely intimidated by leather. I conceptualised it as a symbol of rebellion or danger and in my mind, the colour palette for leather started and ended in black. I always imagined leather pieces as slightly grotesque; adorned in chains, buckles, and zippers. I suppose I thought leather was an all or nothing commitment; you were either Sandy Olsson at the start or end of Grease, with no in-between.

It seems to me like I used to give clothing the power to define my personality one dimensionally. I fit myself into a box which stipulated how or what is appropriate for me to wear – and leather wasn’t on the list. Fortunately, the trend in fashion these days is rule breaking. This is where leather comes in: juxtaposition. Our identity is multi-faceted, and women have the ability to live simultaneously with an air of grace and show of strength. Pairing leather with different styles, colours and textures allows you to showcase these different facets of you.

Let me give an example: leather bottoms and tops are surprisingly easy to wear, and they will lend a hard edge to more delicate pieces. Leather skirts are the perfect pair for intricate blouses or textured woollen knits and by the same token, leather jackets bring strength to feminine dresses.

It’s not all about black. There are many lighter alternatives in leather as well as winter colours such as burn orange, olive green, tans, and chocolate browns. Don’t forget to freshen up the wintry palette with a pop of colour like a coral or bright red lipstick.

If leather clothing is still overwhelming for you, maybe explore your options in the realm of accessories. Belts, bags, and boots are the details that will elevate your wardrobe this winter. Belts are a great way to dress up jeans or add shape when worn on the waist. Reptile skin and neutral shades are super stylish right now and offer a soft finish. Do play around with sizes and shapes to tailor these pieces for your unique style.

The new leathers are so versatile and durable, and they’re also a great fashion investment.
